Regular updates on the amount raised will be broadcast on the stadium screens as well as during the live broadcasts on SABC and SuperSport channels throughout the day.
The Sport & Culture Day is a fundraising event for the Nelson Mandela Children’s Hospital and is being hosted by Department of Sport & Recreation and the Department of Arts & Culture.
“We welcome the minister’s support for the Unite4Mandela SMS Challenge and will be watching with anticipation as we attempt to achieve a target of R1 million on the day,” says Graca Machel, Chairperson of the Nelson Mandela Children’s Hospital Trust.
The Nelson Mandela Children’s Hospital will be a state-of-the-art specialist paediatric academic and tertiary referral hospital providing child-centred best quality medical services to children of Southern Africa, irrespective of their social and economic status.
The Nelson Mandela Children’s Hospital is a unique initiative as it is being built with the support of donors from across the globe, in honour of Mr. Mandela. R1 billion is needed to make the hospital a reality, and every citizen and organisation in the world is being called upon to assist.
“The hospital will address a great need as there are only four hospitals in Africa to serve nearly 450 million children. Millions of these children suffer from life-threatening illnesses and have little or no chance of receiving the specialised care they need,” says Machel.
South African citizens can help make Nelson Mandela’s dream come true by SMSing the word GIFT to 40301 (SMS cost R20, terms, conditions and administrative costs).
For individuals outside South Africa, and organisations wanting to get involved, more information is available at www.nelsonmandelachildrenshospital.org.
